An expert's guide to natural makeup

Surrounded by cameras, beaming family and friends, and (not to mention) the love of your life - your wedding day is the day to make your skin feel in tip-top condition - and nothing quite boosts your confidence like a professional make up look.

To help you out, we’ve had a chat with the wonderful Shannon from S.P.MAKEUP - to make sure you feel comfortable in your own skin on the day.

What advice do you have for brides who are not used to wearing makeup?

“Don’t be afraid to not wear makeup on your special day - and don’t be afraid to wear some! It is your special day and you want to look like yourself and feel confident. Talk to your makeup artist about what you are wanting, and if you are not a makeup user. A great makeup artist will ask you questions to find out exactly what you are after. Makeup doesn’t have to be "big lashes and heavy foundation" on your face. Having a nice smooth coverage foundation with some subtle blush and mascara can be such a lovely "no makeup" kind of look, and be the perfect touch for a non-makeup person.

Also, men are now starting to wear makeup on their day as well! Whether that’s covering up a few spots or smoothing out their skin, makeup is for EVERYONE and can be used in so many different ways to enhance natural beauty.”

What’s your favourite colour palette at the moment?

“One I have recently brought and can’t get enough of is the "Huda Beauty Nudes". These are so easy to blend and a perfect range of natural shades as well as some shimmers which are so pretty on the first 2/3rds of the lid and subtly smoked out with a darker shade.  I personally love enhancing someone’s natural beauty. Working with the right shadow colours to bring out their eye colours or if they are after a bold lip, choosing a colour that suits their whole look and doesn’t make them look "washed out".”

What makeup looks are trending for the upcoming wedding season?

“Since Megan Markle beamed on her wedding day, with a very natural and minimal makeup look, that has definitely trended since! This sort of look reflects confidence and freshness, and lot of brides go for this. I have also noticed a pop of colour. Whether that is a coloured lip, darker or coloured smokey eyeshadow - I even saw a bride with some blue eyeliner on her lower lashes. It was paired so well with her eye colour, and was very wearable and an easy way for her to tick off "something blue".”

Is a more natural makeup look making a comeback? Or if not, what look are you seeing more of?

“Everyone’s perception of "natural makeup" is so different. With everyone interpreting this look differently, it probably never left its just adjusted to each individual need or trends. People would go for the "Instagram brow" which an eyebrow slightly coloured at the start and transitioning into a darker body/tail. That for sure is well on its way out as now people want a natural and "fluffy" eyebrow, just naturally filling in any sparse areas. Soft Glam is another popular look - something a bit more than “natural” but not full on.  Soft glam means you are using pretty neutral colours. It can be soft and smokey and some shimmer on the lid as well. It suits everyone and it doesn’t involve any bright colour eyeshadow or colourful lips!”

Would you recommend doing a makeup trial before the big day?

“100%, and if you can get a trial with more than one artist, go for it! You want to have an artist that understands you and what you are after. Plus, each artist works differently with different techniques. You want to hire an artist who can see and execute your exact vision, so you are at ease on your wedding day. Also, you don’t want to risk not having a trial and on your big day have a look you aren’t happy with or busy trying to wipe off, or fix moments before the aisle.”

Do you have any handy tips for keeping makeup fresh on the day?

“A great artist will have your face locked down to not move but a couple of things to have on hand for touch ups are some cotton tips, lipstick or gloss, and some compact powder if you have oily skin, to powder your t-zone or nose as the night goes on. Don’t forget a couple of hair pins too!”
