Classic romance in the Wairarapa
A classical romantic start to this partnership and a wonderful wedding set in the traditional English country style mansion… Photographed by the lovely Jess Dewsnap. Hamish and Fleur share a little about their romance.
Hamish was the one to ask the question. We had previously discussed that it would be his job. However, if you ask him he will say that he gave me the opportunity to ask all day on the traditional 'ladies day', 29th February 2020, before popping the question on 1st March 2020. We agreed on a weekend away in the Wairarapa so we could enjoy the delicious local wine and food and walk the Patuna Chasm. Saturday saw us enjoy all of the wine and food, with no significant questions asked by me, and Sunday morning we headed to the walk the.
When we arrived at the waterfall Hamish encouraged me to climb up the slippery moss-covered rocks to stand on a ledge for a photo. I wasn't overly excited by the idea and offered to trade and instead take a photo of him. As we debated another person on the walk, Kylie, appeared and offered for her and her family to stop so she could take a photo of us both. While I made my way over and up the rocks onto a ledge, Hamish handed Kylie the phone and let her in on the situation about to unfold. Hamish then skilfully scaled the rocks, twisted past me to shelter me from the waterfall splash and gazed at me. I asked if we were meant to be posing for a photo which brought Hamish back to earth momentarily. Post photo Hamish turned to me once more and got down on bended knee and produced a beautiful pounamu necklace from his pocket and asked me to continue to share adventures with him and would I marry him.
My yes was met with more photos and kisses as well as a bottle of bubbles and 2 champagne flutes he produced from his backpack!
We had two pieces of music at the start of our wedding ceremony. The first was the classical piece 'Also sprach Zarathrustra' (think the classical piece from Space Odyssey 2001), in acknowledgment of our wonderful hosts Marguerite and Garrick as it was their wedding music, then we had five friends start playing Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version of 'Somewhere over the rainbow' on ukuleles.
Post ceremony photos saw our page boy, my nephew Hugh, throw petals that would fall down my cleavage consistently four times in a row. Of course, it wasn't until the last throw that my new husband helped to fish the petals out which was captured well by our fantastic photographer!
